Budget travel
Japan on a budget: start with a smarter route
Think through your route, stays and daily choices before setting a budget.

A good trip begins with a few useful decisions. Use these starting points to shape a visit that fits your interests and the time you have.
Start with the route
Write down the places you most want to see before booking transport. Compare a shorter route with a trip that moves every few days. Fewer changes can give you more time to explore each stop.
Compare the full cost of a stay
Look at the total for your dates, including fees, cancellation terms and the journey from the station. A cheaper room can be less useful if it adds a long journey each day.
Price the journeys you will actually take
Compare individual tickets with any passes you are considering. Check the operator’s current coverage and conditions before buying; a pass only helps if it suits your itinerary.
Leave some days open
Balance booked activities with time to walk and explore. Keep a separate allowance for the experiences you care about most, instead of treating every day as a checklist.
